Sony Confirms Paid-Sub PS3 Video Mag 'Qore', Produced By Future
Wednesday, June 4, 2008; 3:07 PM

Future Publishing (LSE: FUTR) has confirmed to us our earlier report it has been licensed to start providing online magazine-type content to Sony's ( NYSE: SNE) PlayStation Network. "Qore", a monthly digital "program" featuring editorial from Future, will launch on Friday in the US with a possible UK launch later. It will be a premium subscription offering, with both monthly and annual fee structures, though no fees are available yet. The publisher will also sell video, interstitial and contextual ads on the service. Qore will include game demos and previews, tips and developer interviews.

This is Future's first over-the-console mag license and sees it move much further in to online video. It has counted Sony amongst its long-term official licensors in Europe for several years and took the US contract for PSM from Ziff-Davis in January 2007 but that was for print only - the counterpart site psmonline.com has been mothballed and Future's main online games output, gamesradar.com, only uses content from its non-license print titles.

Capcom Announces Neopets Game for Nintendo Platforms
June 4, 2008 at 21:57

Infinite Interactive, the developers of Puzzle Quest, will bring a Neopets game to Nintendo systems for the first time ever this holiday season.

Capcom has announced that the third game based on the Neopets property is underway and coming to the PC and Nintendo systems this holiday season. The game is being developed by Capcom and Infinity Interactive, the makers of last year's sleeper hit, Puzzle Quest.

Neopets Puzzle Adventures (working title) will be based on the classic board game of Reversi (also known as Othello), but Infinity Interactive will build on the experience with 150 different quests spread across the land of Neopia, a variety of the most popular Neopets to choose from (which may be reason for concern to "Lenny" species fans the world over), 150 petpets (pets for the Neopets), mini-games, equippable items, and the deep storylines of nine years of Neopets history.

But in addition to the pick-up-and-play gameplay, Neopets Puzzle Adventures will also reward players with special codes when they achieve certain goals. Players who enter these codes in the online web-based Neopets community will unlock exclusive items for their neopets.com experience.

This will be the third videogame based on the Neopets property. The web-community and flash-game phenomenon previously received the PlayStation 2 game Neopets: The Darkest Faerie in 2005 and the PlayStation Portable game Neopets: Petpet Adventures: The Wand of Wishing in 2006. Both games were published by Sony Computer Entertainment.

But with the franchise now headed to just the PC and Nintendo platforms, Capcom is taking over the publishing reins. Explains Neopets Senior Vice President and General Manager Kyra Reppen, "Our partnership with Capcom provides a new form of game play for Neopets that is relevant to the platforms our audience is using, and that complements the game play on the site."

CAPCOM® AND NEOPETS® PARTNER TO INTRODUCE NEW MULTI-PLATFORM PUZZLE ADVENTURE GAME

Neopets® Puzzle Adventure Coming for Nintendo® Platforms and PC This Winter

SAN MATEO, Calif. and LOS ANGELES— June 3, 2008-- Capcom® Entertainment, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, and Nickelodeon® Kids and Family Group’s Neopets®, the most engaging tween virtual world on the internet (http://www.neopets.com), announced today a partnership to develop a new multi-platform puzzle adventure game, Neopets Puzzle Adventure (working title), for the Wii™, Nintendo DS™ and PC this holiday season. Based on the deep storylines of Neopets, Neopets Puzzle Adventure is a new puzzle game being developed by Capcom and Infinite Interactive, developers of Puzzle Quest™.

"As part of Neopets' strategy to extend the property into a multiplatform brand, we are continuously giving our audiences new ways to play on and off of the site," said Kyra Reppen, Senior vice president and general manager, Neopets. "Our partnership with Capcom provides a new form of game play for Neopets that is relevant to the platforms our audience is using, and that complements the game play on the site."

"Capcom is working to expand the breadth of our catalog to gamers of all ages in North America and Neopets is a perfect brand for us to bring to casual and family gamers," said Germaine Gioia, senior vice president, licensing, Capcom Entertainment. "Combining Capcom’s experience, the rich world of Neopets, and Infinite Interactive’s skills in the puzzle/adventure genre makes a perfect match."

Set to launch on the three systems this holiday season, Neopets Puzzle Adventure takes puzzle solving skills to new levels with a unique Neopets spin. Based on the classic board game, "Reversi", Neopets Puzzle Adventure, is a robust and fully integrated Neopets experience as it includes 150 different quests across vast Neopian lands, a variety of the most popular customizable Neopets to choose from, and several fun mini-games to add depth and fun to the gameplay. As a bonus to Neopets fans, players will be able to earn codes throughout the game that connect back to the Neopets site by achieving certain goals throughout the DS, Wii or PC game. These unique codes will allow players to unlock exclusive items back in their virtual world on neopets.com.

Neopets Puzzle Adventure is the only multi-platform puzzle adventure console game based on the popular virtual, global community. For the Neopets fan, Neopets Puzzle Adventure is a must-have game with its intuitive "pick up and play" game play pattern and new never-before-seen areas in the Neopets universe to explore. GTA IV bricking Xbox 360 consoles
GTA IV bricking Xbox 360 consoles
Plus, RAM issues with Xbox causing game to freeze
Wednesday at 09:57 BST

Following the much-reported problems that PlayStation 3 gamers have experienced with Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV, the latest news is that the game is also causing significant problems for gamers on Xbox 360.

Reports from a number of 360 sites are that the Xbox 360 version of GTA IV has been causing freezing issues and ‘bricking’ some consoles with the dreaded 'Red Ring of Death' problem, the ongoing PR disaster which continues to haunt Microsoft’s Xbox division.

RAM strain

"If you guys actually read and check Rockstar's official GTA IV forums, you'll find out that they are aware of the freezing problems for PS3 and 360. Their current workaround is: "Delete your saved game, and start over."" claimed one forum post on Xbox.com

Others report that, due to the fact that it has been designed to have no loading delays within the game, GTA IV overloads the cache, causing the Xbox 360 to freeze, with calls for Rockstar to release a patch that limits the strain on the Xbox 360’s RAM.

TechRadar has contacted Microsoft and Rockstar today for further clarity on this issue, so stay tuned for updates.

Sony aims to boost PS3 with new HD video show
TV-LIKE CONTENT COMBINED WITH GAME FEATURES
By Mike Antonucci
06/03/2008 03:00:08 AM PDT

Sony on Monday unveiled a new combination of TV-like content and video-game features that may give its PlayStation 3 console a stronger foothold among the many devices competing to provide digital entertainment for TV screens.
Starting Thursday, Sony's online PlayStation Network will sell monthly episodes of a new high-definition show called "Qore," a combination of traditionally viewed programming and game-related options.

Consumers who use the PS3's broadband connection to download "Qore" will be able to go back and forth between watching original material, such as interviews with game developers, or using game demos and other features that are interactive in some way, such as zooming in visually on examples of concept art.

"Qore" is based on appealing to the natural PS3 audience of gamers. But it also could represent another step toward delivering a much wider range of video and Web-linked entertainment that would allow Sony to compete with cable, satellite and Internet companies for the time families spend in front of one screen or another.

"The idea is to have another magnet to keep eyes glued," said Richard Doherty, director of the Envisioneering Group, a consumer electronics consulting firm.

Doherty said research shows slightly more high-definition screens connected to PS3s than Microsoft's Xbox 360s, opening the door for Sony to court a market of videophiles. A spokeswoman for the Xbox Live online network had no immediate comment

The Jason Bourne experience features the signature Bourne-style action delivering gamers a seamless blend of hand-to-hand combat, gunplay, dramatic escapes and stunt-heavy driving.

Through collaboration on story and character development with Bourne screenwriter Tony Gilroy, and a close partnership with Ludlum Entertainment, The Bourne Conspiracy video game is an intense interactive addition to the blockbuster films and best-selling novels. Original missions from Bourne's past, mixed with memorable moments from the film The Bourne Identity, send players on an action-packed journey to uncover the conspiracy shrouding his origins. Players become Bourne, the perfect human weapon, using his characteristic capabilities to recognize threats, perform devastating takedown moves and use his surrounding environment to overcome deadly situations. Rounding out the heart-pounding, hunter-prey action is the game's escape and evade scenarios, where players experience Bourne's distinct death-defying escapes including the adrenaline-pumping high speed pursuit through Paris in a MINI COOPER.

"For the first time ever, fans of the movies, novels or anyone familiar with the relentless action synonymous with Jason Bourne, have the chance to become Bourne," said Pascal Brochier, president, Global Retail for Vivendi Games. "The Bourne Conspiracy allows gamers to take the reigns of a thirty million dollar assassin gone awry and live out the adventure like never before."

Developed by Sierra Entertainment's High Moon Studios, The Bourne Conspiracy video game, introduces a combat system based on the fight choreography of Jeff Imada, the renowned fight stunt coordinator who defined Bourne-style combat in the films. Framing the entire experience is a relentless pace of action and an in-game camera system that captures the cinematography techniques that established the memorable visual style of the films.

The game also delivers a powerful original soundtrack by world renowned DJ, remixer and producer Paul Oakenfold, with the theme song "Falling" featuring the vocals of Atlantic recording artist Cee-Lo Green.

The Bourne Conspiracy is now available for the Xbox 360 and PS3.

The Multiplayer modes also fully support the Loyalty system and hidden items, allowing players more access to strengthen their favorite characters. Kingston co-founder: DRAM makers have no way out
Kingston co-founder: DRAM makers have no way out

David Sun, co-founder of the number-one DRAM module company Kingston Technology, believes that no DRAM maker will voluntarily quit the market as they have no backdoor to exit. Even if more consolidation is seen in the industry, overall capacity will not reduce.

Sun commented that the recent trough in the DRAM industry is very different than the one seen in 2000. Companies such as Fujitsu, IBM, Mitsubishi Electric, OKI, Texas Instruments (TI) and Toshiba quit the DRAM market due to severe competition and shifted their focus to other products. Toshiba, for example, shifted its focus from DRAM to NAND flash and the company has a proven achievement in the NAND flash industry now, stated Sun.

The situation is different now. No DRAM maker will quit the market on their own as they are have no "backdoor" to exit, Sun stated. These players are forced to stay in the DRAM business. Taking Micron Technology as an example, Sun said the company is still having its core operation based on DRAM, despite its extended presence in CMOS image sensor and NAND flash production.

Reviewing major DRAM makers such as Elpida Memory, Nanya Technology, ProMOS Technologies, Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC) and Winbond Electronics, Sun said all of these players have no other product line to shift to if they quit DRAM production.

Even if a price plummet spurs consolidation, Sun said global DRAM capacity is not going to decline. The only solution to return the industry to discipline is a rational expansion that will eventually reduce fresh capacity, he added.

Speaking on behalf of a memory module company, Sun said Kingston thinks visibility in the DRAM industry is relatively clearer than that for NAND flash. Since the price of DDR2 is unlikely to drop below US$0.80 again, procuring in this price range and selling it when the price appreciates will still guarantee profit for the company.
